New to Hunting

If you’ve ever fancied trying out hunting but are not sure where to start then come and join in the fun with The Tedworth Hunt. Everyone is welcome, on foot, in a car, on a bike or on horseback. Contrary to some misconceptions hunting people are friendly and always keen to welcome new people.

You need to contact the Hunt Secretary before you come out so she knows to expect you and on your arrival can introduce you to an experienced hunt follower who will explain what is going on throughout the day.

For more information on hunting the Countryside Alliance provide a helpful newcomers guide.

Approximately 5000 people try out hunting for the first time each year so make this year the year that you give it a go!

Information for Children wishing to Hunt

  • Children on the lead rein must be accompanied by parent / carer either mounted or on foot
  • Children under 14 yrs. must be accompanied by a chaperone, who must be over 18yrs.
  • Extremely competent children aged 14-18 yrs can hunt under the care of a Master rather than a chaperone, as long as the Master is happy to vouch for them
  • Children or their parents must be members BHSA or Countryside Alliance for insurance purposes and to ensure public liability cover while hunting
  • All children must register and pay to attend 24hrs in advance of each meet via our website for the main season and for autumn hunting see this page and scroll down for the autumn hunting payment link

Finding a Chaperone

  • We will run 2 ‘child priority’ meets per Season during when several chaperones will be available to accompany children
  • Children wishing to hunt on standard days can ask one of the Tedworth Hunt Team or their Pony Club DC for assistance finding a chaperone. The Tedworth Hunt team will then try to find a chaperone for the child but cannot guarantee to do so. We can only guarantee chaperone until 2pm
  • Children seeking chaperones must be competent riders in open spaces and turn up with correct tack including martingale or neck strap
  • Parents must share contact details with Chaperones and must be available throughout the day to collect child if they have an issue
  • We cannot provide chaperones for Mount Orleans meets due to the number of attendees, any children wishing to attend Mount Orleans meets must find own chaperone
  • If a child does not have a chaperone or correct tack, the Masters reserve the right to not allow the child to participate
